Alcohol Awareness Month

April as Alcohol Awareness Month and Drug-Free Action Alliance is committed to providing the public with information regarding the disease of alcoholism. It is important to know:

  • Individuals who abuse alcohol are prevalent in every demographic group and cultural group throughout the United States.
  • Studies show that nearly 14 million Americans, which is one in every 13 adults, abuse alcohol or are alcohol dependent.
  • Less than 25% of those who need treatment will receive it in any given year.
  • More than 100,000 individuals die from alcohol-related diseases and injuries each year
  • Drunk driving accounts for an estimated 25% of all alcohol-related deaths per year.
  • ΒΌ of all emergency room admissions, 1/3 of all suicides and 1/2 of all homicides and domestic violence incidents are alcohol-related.
  • Most individuals who abuse alcohol are employed and are productive members of society, creating the perception that a problem does not exist.
  • Current recommended guidelines suggest that adult men limit themselves to two drinks per day, while adult women limit themselves to one drink per day.
  • A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80% distilled spirits.
